Just got back to the Troll Hole after going to the Epic Arts Tea House to see Loretta Lynch for the first time...Jen has been lauding them for ages and at last I got a chance to see what all the fuss was about.
Loretta Lynch is mixed acoustic/electric country type music with an urban, East Bay, feminist slant. 3 women and 1 guy. The three women sing vocals with harmonizing parts, and they all have gorgeous voices that are distinctly different from each other and yet blend marvelously. Plus they play guitar, bass, mandolin, washboard, and switch out their instruments between songs, depending on what they are playing. I loved the playlist, which included "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowgirls," an extremely sad version of "Bad Things Happen" (I was nearly in tears) and this amazing, amazing song called "Santa Muerte" which just knocked my socks off.
Also playing was Hollertown, a two-person band, led by a woman with an absolutely incredible voice, plus she played guitar and mandolin, and the other band member played electric guitar and banjo. (I wish he played banjo for more than one song!) I signed up on their email list and couldn't help but recognize the email address of the person who had signed up before me, though she wasn't at the show tonight. You may be able to guess who this was if I give you a hint or two: she had "goo" in her address, and her first name starts with an L.

That is so hilarious! When I read "Hollertown" I thought "That sounds so familiar." I remembered them when you described the email list. I saw them recently at Nomad Cafe, where I went to see my friend's band play. They played after my friends. At one point, they passed around a clipboard for people to sign up for their email list, and no one signed up. It ended up on an empty table next to us. All of us at our table (five of us), kept saying someone should sign up on the list, because we felt sorry for them, but no one wanted to get more emails. Finally, my heart went out for them and I signed up. That's so funny that you ended up being the next person to sign up! They weren't bad at all, and I enjoyed hearing them play. I just didn't need more emails. Oh, also Bernie and I got into Loretta Lynch a couple of years ago. They're great!
Yeah, I think I was the only one to sign up on their list last night; it was kind of the same thing, but everyone was wandering thru the room where their email list was, and no-one was putting their name down & I felt bad for them so I signed up...
Actually, turns out it was Loretta Lynn, not Loretta Lynch, that Bernie and I got into. Ooops. How's Epic Arts? I've always wanted to check that place out.
Epic Arts is a nice space, a converted apartment where people can gather in several rooms; the decor is fun, hip, with funky furniture, interesting prints on the walls, and color schemes in the same sort of style that Maija likes (rich colors, textured paint).
The space is SMALL. But cozy. There were probably less than 25 people in the audience, which seemed perfect. Everyone was friendly, and they served tea, whiskey, beer, and brownies-in fact, when I walked in, the whole place was scented with baking brownies. The cover was $10, which seemed reasonable to me.
Took me time to read the whole article, the article is great but the comments bring more brainstorm ideas, thanks.
